Readers: Have you rented a car in Montreal?

[UPDATED 2007-07-07]

The Montreal Metro

The Métro is clean, fast, and safe. A weekly pass works both on the subway and on buses. This pass costs C$19.00, so don't buy the pricier one- or three-day tourist passes. Passes are sold at most stops. Say une carte de semaine.

To Montreal by bus

Alas, les bus chinois [still] ne vont pas a montreal.

However, Montreal is served by Greyhound and Vermont Transit (and, for Canadians, Greyhound Canada (once Voyageur)).

To Montreal by train

Amtrak's "The Adirondack" goes from New York's Penn Station to Montréal.

Some may feel that the beautiful ride through the Adirondacks, with the Hudson Palisades on the left catching the morning sun, and Lake Champlain to the right in the afternoon, plus available power strips for computing, combined with a round trip fare of US$128, more than compensates for the fact that the thoroughness of a Canadian Customs inspection makes the notion of on-time arrival a fantasy.

From the airport to downtown Montreal

The price of a taxi from Dorval (the airport, now officially, "Montréal - Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport") is about C$31 one way. The trip should take 15-30 minutes.
