The following student quarters are Spartan, but clean. And cheap.
The Université de Montréal has singles for C$39.99 a night; weekly C$215.16. French- and English-speaking. Beautiful view "north" over the city to the mountains at sunset and in the evening. Telephone; Internet in the room (they even lend you a cable); refrigerator; laundry; dépanneur (Quebecois equivalent of 7-11). The U de M is on the other side of Mount Royal from the conference hotel; the fastest and most scenic route is to take the 165 bus over the mountain from Métro Cote Ste Catherine (observing the massive dome of St. Joseph's Oratory on your right) get off at Guy Concordia, then take the Green line one stop east to Peel.
McGill University (the Harvard of Canada) has slightly more expensive singles starting at C$45 a night and C$270 weekly. English- and French-speaking. No telephone; Internet café; no WiFi unless you have a student login; refrigerator; laundry; no dépanneur; breakfast served in cafeteria. The McGill residences are quite a hike up the mountain (whose rock, as you will see, is sedimentary). McGill is the same side of the mountain as the conference hotel; walk down the mountain and then west on Sherbrooke to Drummond, or take the Métro Green line one stop west to Peel.
Other student lodging can be found at UQAM (downtown, average price C$42 per night), and College Bois de Boulogne (Metro Henri Bourassa, $32).
NOTE: If you cab it in from the airport, make sure the driver doesn't confuse the Universite de Quebec a Montreal (UQAM) with the Universite de Montreal. UQAM is on "Berri," U de M is on "Édouard-Montpetit"
