Montreal's Famous Bagels

A visit to Montreal is not only a time to do some serious XML Geeking, it is a chance to grab some of the world's BEST bagels. (I know, you New Yorker's think you have the world's best bagels, but only those of you who haven't tasted Montreal's bagels.)

Montreal is famous for its bagels. Small, flavorful, dense, just a little sweet, with a hint of smoke becuase they are cooked in a wood-burning oven.

Find time to get to one of the St. Viateur Bagel Shops. The original at 263 St. Viateur West is closest to the Balisage hotel. The one at 1127 Mont. Royal east is a bagel shop and cafe. Take out a bag of bagels or sit down for a great meal surrounded by Montreal's trendy young set.

The Faubourg Ste Catherine

near Concordia has "Bagel Place," with at least a brick oven (I can't swear to seeing wood burning in it). These are delicious, and the Faubourg is within walking distance of the hotel.
