[1] Reconquering of the IM / Info Science space by the tecchies [seems to be underway in govt at the moment.... conversations passim]; [3] Proprietarisation of the internet by something less interoperable with XML than HTML; [4] Identification of a less verbose markup language doing [or perceived to do] the same things; [5] A proprietised XML emerges, not being managed for the public good; [6] Retirement / giving up the fight by those who know it matters?
([1] refers to information strategists being squeezed out by a view that has managers spending money on specific ICT solutions and (business) services, & not paying heed to the value of information as long-term assets - AW)


make obsolete could mean "surpass"
#4 is a positive take on this - a less verbose markup would be interesting - wonder what else could make XML "obsolete" by surpassing it, e.g., something that could handle overlap -- or ?
